I really, really, really appreciated this, and appreciate you having given word to some of what I've been practicing over the last couple of years. My father, who loved swimming and loved swimming as far out into the sea as he could, taught me once about what to do if I ever found myself in a whirlpool (since I would swim out there with him when I could). He told me you should never fight the whirlpool because it's stronger than you and it's going to pull you down and you'll wear yourself out fighting it. You have to swim down to its center, to where its bottom is, and get out of it there. The only way out, he seemed to be saying, is through. Through the terror, and the dizziness, and the tide that is stronger than you.
